  3. 表示强调的单词,比如especially, only, that is to say, all in all等,这些单词或者词组,后面跟的内容,通常都比较重要。

  4. 表示逻辑关系的单词,比如in fact, unfortunately, in contrast to, however等,后面的内容与前面相反或者相对。

  News Report One

France has become the first country to ban supermarkets from throwing away unsold food. Legislators passed the law in February. The law requires supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities and food banks. If supermarkets do not obey the law, they face a US $4,000 fine. The new law is part of France's efforts to rethink consumption practices. Each year, France throws away about 7 million tons of food. That is one-fifth of the amount of food bought each year. Along with individual consumers, restaurants and stores add to the food waste. Other European countries are also making efforts to reduce food waste. In Denmark, a new "waste" supermarket has opened, where customers can buy surplus or leftover food for cheaper prices. Arash Derambarsh is a municipal councilor in a Paris suburb. He started a petition for parliament to adopt the supermarket food waste law.

In Kenya, blind students and those with poor eyesight were still using Braille books for their studies until recently. Their books used the Braille system of raised dots to represent words and numbers. Those with limited or no eyesight can "read" by touching those markings. But Kenyan schools for the blind are now beginning to use technology that provides materials in an audible form. This has expanded possibilities for the students and taught them new ways to interact with technology. Seventeen-year-old Lucas Mwanzia is visually impaired. For the past two years, he has been attending computer classes at the Thika School for the Blind. Lucas Mwanzia is in eighth grade. He started school at a later age because of his poor eyesight. But using the new technology, he can search the Internet for biology class. He says the technology has opened doors that once were closed. He says that Braille books are costly and you have to spend a lot of money to buy one. With computers, he says, the books are available at little or no cost. The young American girl wrote again and again to medical colleges and universities to ask if she could be enrolled(录取), but every time the answer made her very disappointed.

Then one day, she was surprised to be informed that she had been enrolled by a college in Geneva(日内瓦).

At the beginning, Geneva College, just like the other colleges, was not willing to recruit Liza. But later the important people of that college knew that Liza's application(申请) had been supported by a famous doctor, whom they were afraid to offend.

So the president decided to juggle with the matter by involving the students' general meeting of the college, because he believed that the students would not agree Liza to be enrolled.

When the student body met, most students were not interested in the matter. Among the rest of the students, some thought the young American girl's idea interesting and some thought that they could be proud of their college teaching the world's first woman doctor if they got Liza in. Very soon the students all agreed to admit Elizabeth.

  Tips to Improve Your Study

Do you want to improve your study method? Do you feel nervous before the exam? Many students think that they can't concentrate their attention, which has a serious impact on their ability to learn and their test scores.

If you have the same problem, these tips will help you.

You should study in a fixed place for a long time, rather than choose to learn in a place that you use for another purpose. For example, when you are sitting on a sofa, your brain will think that is time to relax. Don't watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn, if you try to study in such a way, your attention will be reduced by 50%. Always try to face a white wall, so there is nothing to distract you. Prepare all the tools you need before you sit down to study. In addition to textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, a dictionary is also required. If you do not study while your study desk or table is needed, put all your equipment into a box beside it.

Reading your books on a flat level can make your eyes tired. So keep your book at an angle of about 30 degrees on horizon.

Be realistic and don't try to do too many tasks at a time of study. Finish one thing; then do another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but don't call your friends or eat.

  19. What has seriously affected students' ability and test scores?

  20. What will happen if you watch TV while you are studying?

  21. How do you make your eyes feel less tired when you are reading?

Reading books on the level can make your eyes feel tired. So keep your book at an angle of 30 degrees from the horizon.

  • Passage Three

  Time Spent in a Bookshop

Whether you are a book lover or just want to buy a book as a gift, the time in the bookstore is probably the most enjoyable. You may even walk into the bookstore looking for shelter just because of the sudden rain. Whatever the reason, you will soon forget about the environment around you.

The desire to pick up a book whose cover is attractive is hard to resist, but this method of selection is not desirable, as you might end up with a rather dull book.

Soon you will be absorbed in reading a book, and usually it takes long to realize that you have spent a lot of time in the bookstore and have to rush to a date that has been forgotten—without buying a book, of course.

In my view, the main attraction of the bookstore is to provide an opportunity to escape from the reality of daily life and there are not so many places where it is possible to do this. You can go around such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, there is no assistant coming to you with inevitable greeting, "What can I do for you, sir?" The bookstore clerk should stay behind the scenes until you finish browsing.

At that time, it is only then that his service was necessary. Of course, you might want to know where a particular area is, but when he has led you there, he should be careful to leave, looking as if he is not interested in selling a single book.

  22. What is probably the most enjoyable according to the passage?

  答案:A

  23. What is hard to resist in the bookshop?

The desire to pick up a book whose cover is attractive is hard to resist,“挑选一本封面有吸引力的书,这种欲望是难以抗拒的”,由此可知,选B“挑一本封面很吸引人的书”。

  24. What is the main attraction of the bookshop?

  答案:D

点睛解析:本题答案很明显,在文中可以听到the main attraction of the bookstore is to provide an opportunity to escape from the reality of daily life,“书店主要的吸引力就是可以提供一个让人逃离现实生活的机会”,所以选D。

  25. What should the bookshop clerk do when you are browsing?
